2011 had some strong shows, but most of them are still too generic. It is time to make myself a list of my anime of the previous year. I only list the shows that I watched and that started in 2011. However, I realise that you can not compare all anime. Some are crap and some simply are amazing.

Crap shows are like this
Good shows like this
Notable things are like this

There are my watched shows of 2011 including comments:
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Made Shiranai – Melodrama at best with funny nicknames.
Blood-C – Just, no, it is horrible. I expected way better.
Carnival Phantasm – For fans of Type-Moon only.
Chihayafuru – Chihaya self is just loveable. Josei for the win.
Dantalian no Shoka – episodic and bad directing.
Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko – Erio. Why. You. So. Cute. Also, Shaft, so plenty of fun.
Dragon Crisis! – It is cute, the action was very awesome, but just average. Underrated while it is okay.
Fate/Zero – If you did not see F/SN, then do not go watch F/SN, but F/Z. The animation is sheer epic, hail to UFOTABLE!
Fractale – If you are a critic and begin your own anime, at least make it a good one, not an average one. I do like the idea that we depend too much on computers.
Gosick – At least this one is not badly directed.
Hayate no Gotoku Movie: Heaven is a place on Earth – Is further then the manga is.
Hidan no Aria – Female reincarnations of old detectives and pantsu and schizophrenics. NO!
Ikoku Meiro no Croisee – I just love European setting anime. First episodes were fine, but turned pretty weak later. Loved it anyway, especially Yune and Claude.
Kaminomi zo Shiru Sekai II – First season was good, and so is this season.
Kamisama no Memo-chou – One of the better detectives this year, at least some real manlyness in here.
Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season – Adorable, once again and some development since first season.
Kimi to Boku – Slice of life, but instead of loveable cute girls, some bishounen. Average. Not worth your time.
Level E – episodic, smart alien that wants to be amused. At first hilarious, later on just crap.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica – Mahou shoujo made dark and well executed. Executed. See what I did there?
Maria Holic Alive - Uhm, yeah. Zero plot progression.
Mawaru Penguin Drum – About true famil and Disney resurrections. Full of symbolism. FABULOUS MAX.
Mirai Nikki – I do not know about the manga, but this story is like Higashi no Eden, only with a wimpy male character and a yandere female companion.
Natsume Yuujinchou San – Yes, I had to cry at some episodes, but there was little development in this season.
Nichijou – You either like it or hate it, that kind of comedy with crazy stuff going on.
No. 6 – complot conspiracy all over, also has lots of fangirls because of crossdressing for a play. Could be better.
Macross Frontier 2nd movie: Sayonara no Tsubasa – That animation. Oh. My. Gawd. I remember Sheryl’s performance in the first movie, but Ranka’s new performance is just splendidly animated! This also gives closure to the triangle, unlike the TV series ending.
Sekaiichi Hatsukoi TV – I would watch the second season if it did not have shounen-ai. Really interesting if you want to know more about publishing and manga.
Shakugan no Shana III Final – It is finally here. Plottwist!
Steins;Gate – You can never look at jelly bananas the same anymore. The fun starts at episode 12. Awesome characters. ‘Tutu-ru’ and ‘El Psy Congroo’.
Un-Go  - This is a no go. I do not like my detectives with some mysterious transforming boy-woman that eats souls. Should have done more with the post-war setting.
Usagi Drop – Rin-chan… Be my daughter. I had to cry plenty of times watching this.
Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san TV – It sounded funny when I first looked at it, but I just hated the stupid lion-thing.
Yumekui Merry – Dropped this. I expected more cats, for some reason I do not know.
Because I feel like it:
Favourite characters of 2011 coming up.

No-good detectives

As I finally caught up with this season’s airing shows I thought: ‘Let’s see what’s on my watching list’. I took a look and I noticed that I was still watching some mystery-ish shows: Dantalian no Shoka, Darker than Black, Gosick, Kamisama no Memochou and Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin. I watched episode 7 of Dantalian yesterday and then I thought: … What is this show about? … Well, first of all, the reasons I started watching it is because Huey is a lovely bishounen and it’s about books. I like books. It also appeared to have some tsundere. Well, I could live with that, nothing wrong with some tsundere now and then, but if the plot is also episodic and boring, you lost me. Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Nichijou are episodic, but funny, that’s why I like them, but these shows are not my thing. The opening of Dantalian no Shoka is very nice and catching, which reminded me of the opening of Allison to Lillia, for those who have seen it (or not). I dropped these titles for now, untill someone can convince me to pick them up again. I would be grateful if you were right and you made me feel like I really missed something. Till then… Nope.

Okay, not all of those shows are completely episodic, for example Gosick, but they do not get my interest. However, one anime that I am watching weekly and that is even weirder is Un-Go. Un-go is a n0-go for me. Okay, I still have to watch episode 5 and it got better at episode 4, but I guess I should just quit watching mystery like anime. They can not get my attention. I love Agatha Christie’s stories and their adaptations. Perhaps it’s just that I saw a lot of them and it is getting predictable for me. I just do not see any fun in it anymore. The only reason why I am still watching Un-Go is because it’s airing weekly.

That penguin!

I guess some people can already guess what this is about: Mawaru Penguin Drum. If you didn’t, now you do.

When I first heard of the story, I was like: ‘Dude, that just sounds like Full Moon o Sagashite’ and I couldn’t be motivated to watch it, so I did not even put it on my plan to watch list. However, I turned out to be pretty bored and I started watching the first three episodes. Oh, and I like it. Finally some non-moe character show. Well, without much exaggeration. I bet the fangirls will start screaming about the two brothers who’d do anything for poor Himari. But it’s not the two brothers that steal the show, no, it’s the penguins that the siblings get. Three little penguins who will do anything to help the siblings and are only visible for them. It’s kind of weird that they can touch things though. Perhaps that will be explained later or something, but for now, the brothers have to look for an item called a Penguin Drum… by royal discreet of Himari’s hat personality. Oh, that also turns her in some way too much showing bathing suit with a cape. But okay, since she’s wearing that hat. But what makes this show are those penguins. They are funny, useful and the best sidekicks ever, since they don’t talk with an annoying voice.

To sum Mawaru Penguin Drum up:

  • Two awesome brothers with one being a charmer
  • A mysterious disease that haunts their younger sister
  • A stalker girl
  • Three awesome penguin
  • A talking penguin hat that gives a young girl a showing uniform
  • Non-moe, non-boobalicious, etc.
  • Cute designs and animation
  • Possible love triangles

Ahaha, I returned! From what, death? Yeah, years ago, but back to talking about talking about anime again! Okay, so as I am also attending university, but it gives me plenty of time to watch anime. Let me tell you my line-up for this fall season that I am watching:

  • Fate/Zero
  • Kimi to Boku
  • Chihayafuru
  • Shakugan no Shana III Final
  • Mirai Nikki
  • Un-Go
If I had to think of ordering it from ‘Really want to watch’ till ‘Don’t really want to watch’ it would look like this:
  1. Fate/Zero
  2. Chihayafuru
  3. Mirai Nikki
  4. Shana III
  5. Kimi to Boku
  6. Un-Go
Fate/Zero is the bomb this season, that is a fact. However, you definitely should have some knowledge from Fate/Stay Night. On the other hand, it would be pretty cool if you keep the future of the characters (Rin, Sakura) for later, as Fate/Zero is still a prequel. I feel so sorry for Irisviel… Also, that Waver. I wish I could do that, hypnotise people so I would have no trouble having a place to stay anywhere at all. Uhm, I should not go into details too much. Story is dark and I like that, especially since there’s no whining Shirou involved (yet). Animation, oh Ufotable, I never want anything else than your animation again. Please. I am glad they are splitting the long series up into two shorter series so we will see even more quality animation instead of rush work. Oh yes, bishounen tag here.
So, Chihayafuru. I picked it up because it has the josei tag and as I am a woman, yes, still being an otaku, it really does appeal to me. Finally we have some sort of shojo-anime that has a non-typical main character. Being all pretty, but acting a bit weird, in this case wanting to play Karuta. There is a lot of flashback of her old school days with her karuta friends and now she wants them to join her club, otherwise her club will be abandoned. Oh, wait, that actually sounds like some typical anime. But not to me. I think this anime is pretty touching and that is why I placed it pretty high, as I really want to know more about the characters and I know that that time will come. Story wise: low, but progressive. Animation: nothing mentionable. Character development: it’s getting there.
Mirai Nikki. Nobody was looking forward to it after the OVA. Well, I did not watch the OVA and I think that is a good thing. A boy, a cellphone, a yandere stalker. What more can you want. Oh, and I was not talking about School Days. No, Mirai Nikki is pretty cool with a guy that can make his own world alive. It is exciting and now I want to have a diary too… It’s this blog. So can I now change what’s on Japan’s channels? Animation: pretty nice. Story: excitingu! Character development: a bit.
Shana III, boy, I surely needed that recap in episode 3 as the first two seasons were so long ago… Really, I needed it. I am still a bit lost though, but hey, I guess that will change soon enough. I like the plottwist from season two to three. Oh, that Yuuji. Now you are finally becoming a man. Anyhow, Shana III isn’t as awesome as I was hoping it to be.
I picked up Kimi to Boku because I was like: wait, a title like that and it is NOT shounen-ai? That’s new to me, so I picked it up. It is just your regular slice of life with the usual what a story wants characters: megane-kun, twins, a newcomer, boy that could be a girl and a crush or two, three. It is a cute and natural without a real story, but that is life. Oh, and bishounen. Well, my life has one now.
Last up and the worst in my opinion: Un-Go. I wish I never started watching this. Okay, it is not that horrible. I am fine with detective anime, and a side-kick is fine, but if you want to convince me that that thing in a panda-costume is supposed to be a boy and transforms into a woman because it wants to know the truth by asking just one question, that is kind of lame to me. Okay, I just stumble upon a topic on AniDB that someone thinks this is similiar to also one of my favourite manga, Hatenkou Yuugi. Well, I  do not think so. It is completely different. First of all the humor is different and Hatenkou Yuugi also has a bit of mystery, but it does not have a transforming shota that turns into a slapping bitch. So not comparable.
Okay, soon enough a new post! :3

1Q84

Filed under Murakami by Suii on 26-05-2011

I finally found the time to finish reading 1Q84, book three, just today. I can only say that I love it. Yes, it’s still Murakami: Little People are everywhere and you don’t even get any more clue about them, but this time, the story actually felt wrapped up. Too bad there was little Fukaeri in it in the end… Ah, how Tamura got his ‘screentime’ in an unexpected way, just like Ushikawa. It was a lovely read.

Well, that’s one on my Murakami reading challenge list! It’s time for me to go buy a new one! I don’t feel like re-reading anything now, something new should do.
